Nessel announces release of guide for investigating and prosecuting vulnerable adult financial exploitation

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Monday announced the Elder Abuse Task Force has released “A Guide to Investigation & Prosecution of Vulnerable Adult Financial Exploitation.”

The guide was produced by a subcommittee of the Task Force composed of prosecutors and police officers from various agencies within Michigan. It includes a comprehensive list of reference tools, as well as two sample case studies. The case studies are based on actual cases that have been prosecuted to completion, and all identifying details have been altered within the guide. The guide is available as a resource for any officer or prosecutor handling a case of suspected vulnerable adult financial exploitation.

“As the population of Michigan ages, we expect to see more reports of vulnerable adult financial exploitation made to local law enforcement,” said Nessel. “It is critical that police officers and prosecutors have access to the tools and training they need to thoroughly investigate these cases and to prosecute criminal activity, and I continue to be proud of the work of the Elder Abuse Task Force to help serve as a resource to law enforcement.”

The guide has been distributed to the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, the Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association. The guide is available to all prosecutors and police officers on the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan website at https://michiganprosecutor.org.

Elected prosecutors and police agency supervisors may email direct requests for electronic copies, or requests for additional training.
