The Wolverine Bar Association (WBA) will host "Reminisce," the 49th Annual Barristers' Ball, on Saturday, March 20, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Renaissance Marriott Hotel in downtown Detroit. This year's Ball will feature musical guest Doug E. Fresh.
The WBA is one of Michigan's oldest special purpose bar organizations. The Ball will honor the WBA's 80-year legacy and commitment to diversity, excellence in the legal profession, and improvement to the quality of life in the metropolitan Detroit area. The Ball also supports the Wolverine Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, which is the charitable arm of the WBA.
"The Barristers' Ball provides critical funding for the Wolverine Bar Foundation, which enables the organization to make a notable difference in the legal profession and in our communities," said Michelle A. Carter, president of the WBA and a partner at Detroit-based law firm Bodman LLP. "Since its inception, the Foundation has served as a force of change in Michigan.
"As a result of the dedicated support the organization receives each year from the lawyers, judges, politicians, and business and community leaders, the Foundation has provided numerous scholarships to law students, participated in pro bono activities and services, conducted community outreach programs, and hosted forums on legal issues designed at improving the quality of life in the communities where we practice," Carter continued. "The Ball is also an excellent way to network and connect with many of this area's legal, business and community leaders and have fun at the same time."
Each year, the WBA sponsors and supports dozens of programs including the annual Hon. Damon J. Keith Community Spirit Award and Scholarship Luncheon; Federal Judicial Externship program for law students; Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy competition; summer clerkship program; pro bono services and expungement clinics; programs for children residing at area homeless shelters; and co-sponsoring the Saving Kids of Incarcerated Parents annual fundraiser.
The Barristers' Ball is preceded by the President's Reception, which begins at 7 p.m. The Ball will feature food, live entertainment, and dancing.
