Soldier sentenced to life in sister's death

PONTIAC (AP) -- An Oakland County man convicted in the rape and slaying of his teenage sister while he was on leave from U.S. Army basic training has been sentenced to life in prison.

Steven Kelsey Jr. apologized during his sentencing Wednesday in Oakland County Circuit Court, saying he was "haunted" by his actions in the New Year's Day 2009 death of 17-year-old Jesika Kelsey.

The 20-year-old Kelsey was found guilty of first-degree murder Jan. 28 in the death of his sister, who bled to death after being stabbed in the family's Highland Township mobile home, about 30 miles northwest of Detroit.

Defense attorney Michael McCarthy says the first-degree murder conviction left Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick with no choice but to send Kelsey to prison for life.
