Michigan Supreme Court to host 21st annual Adoption Day

The Michigan Supreme Court will host its 21st Annual Adoption Day event with a special court session that will include adoption finalizations from Ingham County and an awards ceremony for honorees within the child welfare system.  The event will take place Tuesday, November 21, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Michigan Hall of Justice in Lansing. It will be livestreamed at www.courts.michigan.gov/court-livestream.

Following adoption finalizations, the celebration will include the presentation of the 2023 Daniel J. Wright Lifetime Achievement Award to Michigan Court of Appeals Chief Judge Elizabeth Gleicher, and the 2023 Maura D. Corrigan Foster Family Lifetime Achievement Award to Kent County foster parent Kristin Vanderkam.

Gleicher will be honored for her instrumental role in shaping child welfare law through her opinions, concurrences, and dissents.

Vanderkam is being honored for her six years of dedicated service in the social work field and for opening her home as a foster parent to a total of 12 high-needs youth.

To celebrate National Adoption Month under the theme of “Giving Thanks for Families,” courts statewide will celebrate Michigan Adoption Day 2023. Held on or near the Tuesday before Thanksgiving each year, Adoption Day has become a holiday tradition, highlighting the importance of adoption and the needs of children in foster care to find a forever family. Many courts will publicly finalize adoptions, while others will hold informational events to reach potential adoptive parents.
