Appeals court rules Flint can’t be sued over suicide

FLINT (AP) — The Michigan Court of Appeals says Flint can’t be sued for the death of a man who killed himself after police returned a gun to him.

Kyle Wheeler’s gun was taken after he tried to kill himself in 2014 but was returned 13 months later in January 2016. He killed himself in May of that year.

Wheeler’s family says Flint was negligent in returning the gun. The appeals court says police failed to follow “guidelines, ordinances and statutory requirements,” but Flint still is immune to a lawsuit because the conduct doesn’t fall into any of six exceptions.

The court reversed a decision by Genesee County Judge Geoffrey Neithercut.

Police chief charged with lying to detectives

CHARLOTTE (AP) — A mid-Michigan police chief has been arraigned on official misconduct and other charges for allegedly lying that his wife had been sexually assaulted by a sheriff's deputy.

Potterville Police Chief Shane Bartlett also was arraigned Wednesday on charges of lying to police in a violent crime investigation and making a false report of a felony.

His attorney, Matt Newburg, says he'll vigorously challenge the allegations.

Authorities say the charges stem from a State Police investigation that started when Bartlett’s wife, Kellie, accused an Eaton County deputy of sexual assault. Kellie Bartlett at the time was a clerk with the sheriff's office. She's been charged with filing a false report and several other counts.

Potterville City Manager Aaron Sheridan said Shane Bartlett has been suspended with pay.

Finders keepers: Police say no way after $30K spills on road

GRAND HAVEN (AP) — Police are appealing to people to surrender their instant riches after a box with $30,000 fell off the back of a truck.

Authorities in Grand Haven say drivers stopped last Thursday to pick up cash for themselves. Only $2,500 was immediately recovered and returned to the owner, who had forgotten that a cash box was on the truck's bumper.

Traffic was backed up on U.S. 31 after money hit the ground.

But by Saturday, more money was trickling in. Officials say two teens turned in $630, and a woman gave up nearly $3,900.

The department says on Facebook : “We commend you for your honesty!!”

Man with moose nuggets in carry-on says politics stinks

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Politics can stink.

That was the message delivered by a traveler to airport inspectors in Alaska who found moose nuggets inside his carry-on bag.
KTOO Public Media reports the man told agents he collects the droppings and likes to present it “for politicians and their bleep policies.”

A TSA spokeswoman says the discovery didn’t warrant writing a report and the man was sent on his way with the poop.

It’s not known if it was the same person, but a man was seen passing out baggies of moose nuggets at the Capitol on the same day as a protest against the governor’s proposed budget.
