Law schools invite community to 'Women in Arts and Entertainment Law Series'

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law invites community participation in its upcoming virtual cross-border series, “Women in Arts and Entertainment Law,” offered in partnership with University of Windsor Faculty of Law and the City of Detroit. Members of the public, creatives, and legal professionals interested in the legal issues facing women in the fashion, music, film, and visual arts industries are encouraged to attend.

The first topic in the series, “Women in Fashion Law,” will take place on Thursday, February 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. via Zoom. Guests will learn about cross-border merchandising and entrepreneurship issues and how intellectual property law protects fashion. Ashlee Froese, a prominent Canadian fashion lawyer, and Jehan Crump-Gibson, co-founder and managing partner of Great Lakes Legal Group PLLC.

Other events in the series will include “Women in Music Law,” “Women in Film Law,” and “Women in Visual Arts.” At each series event, law professors and law student clinicians will present on current legal issues impacting women creatives, and guest speakers who work in the fashion industry will share their experiences with the legal issues being discussed.

Both Detroit Mercy Law and Windsor Law offer an arts and entertainment law clinic to serve and empower creatives. This series programming is made possible by the longstanding transnational collaboration between the two law schools.

Melissa Eckhause, assistant professor of law and co-Director of the Arts and Entertainment Law Clinic at Detroit Mercy Law, was inspired to launch the series this term due to the all-female student enrollment in the clinic this term. Eckhause has more than a decade of experience representing music and film producers, Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, entertainment professionals, and professional athletes.

Detroit Mercy Law’s clinic launched in fall of 2022 and is the only clinic of its kind in the state of Michigan. Windsor Law’s clinic launched in the winter of 2023 and is led by Dr. Shanthi Senthe, assistant professor of law at Windsor Law.
