Crockett to lead Miller Canfield’s Women’s Legal and Business Network

Michelle P. Crockett, a labor and employment lawyer and principal at Miller Canfield, is the new chair of the firm’s “Women of Miller Canfield” legal and business network.  She succeeds corporate lawyer Lisa D. Pick who served as chair for three years.

In her new role, Crockett will lead the firm’s more than 100 female lawyers in strengthening their internal, professional relationships with colleagues in all of Miller Canfield’s 18 offices.  She will also coordinate and foster building business relationships through external strategic business networking and educational events.

“We share best practices, introduce clients and friends to each other and help build business,” said Crockett.  “The firm has supported women lawyers’ networking efforts informally for decades. In 2003 we formalized our efforts and function in a more organized manner.”

Crockett received her J.D. from Wayne State University Law School and her B.A. from North Carolina State University. She lives in Southfield. For more information, visit www.millercanfield.com/Diversity.

WBA to host 49th annual Barristers’ Ball March 20

The Wolverine Bar Association will host “Reminisce,” the 49th Annual Barristers’ Ball, on Saturday, March 20 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Renaissance Marriott Hotel in downtown Detroit. This year’s ball will feature musical guest Doug E. Fresh.

The ball will honor the WBA’s 80-year legacy and commitment to diversity, excellence in the legal profession, and improvement to the quality of life in the metropolitan Detroit area. The ball also supports the Wolverine Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3)  tax-exempt organization, which is the charitable arm of the WBA.

“The Barristers’ Ball provides critical funding for the Wolverine Bar Foundation, which enables the organization to make a notable difference in the legal profession and in our communities,” said Michelle A. Carter, president of the WBA and a partner at Detroit-based law firm Bodman LLP.  “Since its inception, the Foundation has served as a force of change in Michigan.

“As a result of the dedicated support the organization receives each year from the lawyers, judges, politicians, and business and community leaders, the Foundation has provided numerous scholarships to law students, participated in pro bono activities and services, conducted community outreach programs, and hosted forums on legal issues designed at improving the quality of life in the communities where we practice,” Carter continued. “The ball is also an excellent way to network and connect with many of this area’s legal, business and community leaders and have fun at the same time.”

Each year, the WBA sponsors and supports dozens of programs.

The Barristers’ Ball is preceded by the President’s Reception, which begins at 7 p.m. The ball will feature food, live entertainment, and dancing.

To purchase tables or tickets, contact the WBA at (313) 962-0250 or at wbaoffice@ameritech.net.  For more information, visit the WBA web site at www.wbadirect.org.
