Attorneys from Ford Motor Co., (left to right) Marcy Wolfson, Steve Betz, Daniella Saltz, Rob Mossel and Lynn Matuszak volunteered to help Legal Aid and Defender Association’s food-stamp screening project at Carstens Elementary School.
With the help of five volunteer attorneys from the General Counsel Office of Ford Motor Co., Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) recently conducted a pilot online food-stamp screening project at Carstens Elementary School in Detroit.
The project was designed to identify children and families who are eligible for food stamps but do not receive them or who receive them but are qualified for higher food-stamp grants.
LAD and school staff publicized the project to families in the community using gasoline and grocery-store gift cards as incentives to participate.
LAD staff trained the Ford attorneys to screen participants using laptop computers and Internet access provided by the school.
During the four-hour morning session, the Ford attorneys interviewed 16 participants.
A Ford Motor Co. Fund and Community Services grant funded the project.
“We were pleased with the project and will use it as a model for similar projects in our tri-county service area of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties,” said Lynda Krupp, managing attorney of LAD’s Private Attorney Involvement Unit.
