Writer joins Legal News staff

John Minnis, former editor of The Grosse Pointe News, has joined the editorial staff of The Detroit Legal News.
His hiring was announced by Suzanne Favale, publisher of The Legal News network of three daily and seven weekly newspapers stretching across Michigan.
A resident of Grosse Pointe Woods, Minnis will be responsible for covering a range of legal matters in metro Detroit, while also contributing to the company’s quarterly magazine, Motion.
Minnis began his journalism career in 1985 at The Source Newspapers in Utica. He later worked at Neighbor Newspapers in Marietta, Ga., outside Atlanta, serving as associate editor of two of the company’s weekly publications.
In 1988, Minnis and his wife, Terry, returned to the Detroit area, where he was hired as a reporter for The Grosse Pointe News. He rose through the ranks to become editor of the award winning weekly, eventually spending 19 years with the newspaper. Minnis has served as a freelance writer for The Legal News over the past three years.
A twin, Minnis grew up as one of eight children on a farm in the Thumb, graduating from Yale High School in 1973.
He earned an associate’s degree from Macomb Community College, a bachelor degree in journalism from Wayne State University, and a master’s from Michigan State University.
He serves as a trustee of the Grosse Pointe Public Library and on the Grosse Pointe Library Foundation board. He also is on the board of The Family Center of Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods, serving as volunteer newsletter editor and chairman of the marketing committee.
