Commemorated annually since that date, Law Day programs are conducted throughout the country by bar associations, courts, schools, and civic groups.
This year’s theme is “Law in the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges.” The Muskegon County Bar Association’s annual event took place on Friday, May 7 at 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Muskegon Harbor. This year’s distinguished speaker was international business attorney Charles E. McCallum. Mr. McCallum will speak to members of the bar association, distinguished members of the community, and local elementary, middle and high school contest winners and their teachers.
In conjunction with the Law Day event, the bar association sponsored several local contests. The first contest is the High School Speech Contest. This contest is open to area seniors. This year the bar association has increased the college scholarship awards as follows: first place winner, $2000; second place, $1000; third place, $500; and fourth place, $250. This increase is thanks to the Muskegon County Bar Association’s Law Education Fund.
The second contest was the Middle School Essay Contest open to Muskegon County sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. The top four winners of the essay contest will receive savings bonds.
The third contest was the Elementary Art Contest open to area elementary students. The top four winners of the art contest will receive savings bonds.
The bar association honored an area teacher with the Golden Apple Award. This award recognizes a Muskegon County teacher who has made outstanding contributions to law-related education. This year’s recipient will also receive a $500 classroom grant.
The Muskegon County Bar Association also honored a probation officer with the Frank D. Scott Award. This award recognizes an individual probation officer who goes above and beyond the role of a committed employee through volunteerism and activism that begs for recognition.
The final award for the Muskegon County Bar Association Law Day event is the Liberty Bell Award. This award recognizes outstanding service performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the justice system. In 2009, the recipient was Rosemary Stellino, former child welfare supervisor the Muskegon County Department of Human Services.
