Helping a maturing society

Elder Law of Michigan, a non-profit organization offering programs and services designed to meet the needs of a maturing society, recently celebrated 20 years of service.
The following services are provided:
• Legal Hotline for Michigan Seniors.
The hotline, which has served 135,000 seniors since it began, offers adults 60 and older and their families basic legal advice and information over the phone from experienced elder law lawyers.
The hotline answers questions on wills, probate, long term care, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, Consumer issues, housing and other personal legal issues.
Lawyers, who wish to volunteer or want more information, call 800-347-5297.
• Pension Rights Project.
The Mid-America Pension Rights Project answers questions, gathers information and resolves pension and retirement benefit concerns.
Michigan retirees can talk to attorneys for free and get help with basic advice about pension laws, finding “lost” pensions due to company mergers, relocation or bankruptcy, investigating benefit denials, filing appeals and filing claims.
The project has served 6,581 individuals recovering pensions valued at $31,092,263.
• Consumer Fraud Prevention Project alerts and informs older consumers about ways to protect themselves from becoming victims of telemarketing scams and fraud.
It is one of seven national call centers funded by AARP Foundation. Its volunteer staff has assisted 358,000 individuals.
• Michigan’s Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly (MiCafe) .
This volunteer program helps low-income adults age 60 and older secure food, medical and utility assistance to meet their basic needs.
They provide one-on-one coaching and support. 11,602 older adults have been assisted with food assistance and benefits to date.
Elder Law of Michigan also offers a variety of programs and services that benefit the fields of law and aging and further their mission.
