 Deceased Rhoades McKee attorney, Robert J. Dugan, served West Michigan for

39 years
Robert J. Dugan, who died July 22, served his profession and community continuously throughout his life including as a President of the Grand Rapids Bar Association in 2004. Most recently, Dugan was a Chair of the Evaluation Committee and a Member of the Board of Directors of Alliance for Health, served as a hearing officer for the Attorney Discipline Board for the State Bar of Michigan, and as an agent and Secretary with the Charles M. Gates Jr. Foundation.
He was active in community organizations including but not limited to Grand Rapids Jaycees, Grand Rapids Hockey Association, Grand Rapids Symphony, and Goodwill Industries.
He was acknowledged by his peers continuously as a Michigan Law & Politics Super Lawyer and received the Grand Rapids Bar Association, Distinguished Service Award in 1996.
Having suffered an abdominal aneurysm in 1991 which resulted in paralysis and left him wheelchair-bound, Dugan was consistently assisting others with similar challenges to adapt in handling workplace and home adjustments. He often counseled others, seeking to give them the benefit of his experience in an effort to adjust to physical disabilities. He was profiled by the Grand Rapids Press in August 2007 for these efforts.
Dugan was a graduate of the University of Michigan in 1968 and University of Michigan School of Law in 1971.
Dugan is survived by his wife, Jean, and two children. The family has asked that those wishing to honor Robert Dugan give memorial contributions to the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Center or to Disability Advocates of Kent County.
