Judges to take part in Patriot Week at Cooley
Cooley Law School and the Oakland County Bar Association Diversity Committee present Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura D. Corrigan, Michigan Court of Appeals judges, Christopher M. Murray and Elizabeth L. Gleicher, and District Court Judge Cynthia Thomas Walker in a panel discussion Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, to celebrate Patriot Week. The discussion, "Judging America: Have We Fulfilled Our Promise of Equality?" will be moderated by Judge Michael David Warren Jr., 6th Circuit Court in Pontiac, Mich. A reception will be held 5-5:30 p.m., and the discussion will take place 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Wayne Law to host annual labor law symposium, Oct. 14
Wayne State University Law School students, alumni and friends interested in increasing their insight into labor law are invited to attend the 18th annual Bernard Gottfried Memorial Labor Law Symposium from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14.

Sponsored by Wayne Law, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Region Seven, and the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Section, the symposium will be held in the Law School’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium and will feature breakout sessions led by local and national labor relations experts.

Sessions include “Privacy in the Workplace: Section 7 vs. Employer Rights” and “Improving the NLRB by Administrative Change.” Board member Craig Becker will be this year’s keynote luncheon speaker. Former Board members Robert Battista and Dennis Devaney, as well as former general counsel Leonard Page, will kick off the afternoon 75th NLRB anniversary reception.

“We are pleased to honor the legacy of Bernard Gottfried once again through this symposium, and look forward to providing the legal community with this extraordinary opportunity to hear from well-known labor law experts,” said Wayne Law Dean and Professor Robert M. Ackerman.

The registration fee for the symposium is $100 and includes all sessions, a continental breakfast and lunch. Students, NLRB staff and government employees may register for a reduced cost of $25.

Proceeds from the symposium will be used to fund future educational programs and labor-related studies at the Law School.

Bernard Gottfried (1925-1992) was director of the National Labor Relations Board, Region Seven from 1973 until his death. He taught at Wayne Law for many years and this symposium honors his vision for labor relations.

‘Call for Action’ seeks volunteer attorneys
Volunteer attorneys are being sought by WXYZ-TV Channel 7’s Call for Action.

Every Thursday volunteer attorneys come to the Channel 7 offices to answer incoming calls regarding legal matters.  The phones are open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The attorneys remain anonymous to callers and do not take cases for themselves.  They refer callers to bar associations and give general legal information.

Call for Action provides a light lunch.  The Channel 7 offices are located at 20777 W. Ten Mile Road in Southfield.  Anyone interested in volunteering should call (248) 827-1108.
