Prosecutor: More charges to come in serial stabbing case
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — A Flint prosecutor says he anticipates more charges in September against a man accused of one stabbing and suspected in 13 others.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton spoke to reporters Tuesday after a brief court hearing for Elias Abuelazam. The 33-year-old defendant stayed in jail and did not attend.

Abuelazam is charged with attempted murder in just one case. Five men were killed during a series of stabbings in the Flint area.

Defense lawyer Brian Morley received nearly 200 pages and a CD as evidence in the attempted murder case. The next court hearing is Sept. 21.

Abuelazam was arrested Aug. 11 in Atlanta while awaiting a flight to his native Israel. He is suspected in two stabbings and a hammer attack in Virginia and a stabbing in Ohio.

‘The Tea Party’ to file appeal with Michigan Supreme Court
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A group calling itself “The Tea Party” plans to file an appeal with the Michigan Supreme Court in the hope that its candidates will be allowed to run in the general election.

The state Court of Appeals ruled Monday the group doesn’t qualify for the ballot because it didn’t correctly show its name on petitions.

The lawyer for “The Tea Party” said Tuesday he plans to file an emergency appeal. Michael Hodge has argued the group’s petitions substantially met the requirements of state law.

Republicans and tea party activists say “The Tea Party” is a fake party controlled by Democrats aimed at drawing away votes from GOP candidates. They don’t want it on the ballot. Their lawyer says he’ll decide what steps to take once he sees what Hodge files.
