Two Grand Rapids attorneys have been included on a prestigious list of 20 as Michigan Lawyers Weekly honors “Women in the Law” for the first time in 2010.
Warner Norcross & Judd LLP partner Sue O. Conway, and Miller Johnson’s Carol J. Karr will join a select few female lawyers from around the state, though mostly from the Southeast corner, at a ceremony on Sept. 16 in Detroit.
Neither Conway nor Karr is a stranger to awards and accolades, and both have been featured in recent Grand Rapids Legal News profiles in recognition of their prowess. (Conway was featured in the Sept. 16, 2009 issue and Karr in May 19, 2010.)
The awards recognized attorneys for their performance in the following areas:
• Excellence in the practice of law;
• Inspired and accomplished leadership in the profession;
• Mentoring other women;
• Volunteerism and pro bono work.
Conway was nominated by a long-time Warner Norcross client, who said in the nomination letter, “Conway...exemplifies what your criteria tell me you are looking for – and what it means to be a true
woman leader in the Michigan legal community.”
Conway not only has a highly successful practice in employee benefits law, with an emphasis on consumer-engaged health plans, design of health and fringe benefit plans, she also is Warner Norcross’s serves Marketing and Business Development Partner.
Among her many honors are as one of the Top 50 Women Super Lawyers by Michigan Super Lawyers, and being named among the 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan by the Grand Rapids Business Journal.
Her community involvements include serving on the state board for the professional women’s organization Inforum, chairing Leadership Grand Rapids and the Women’s Resource Center in the past, and being a former board member of the Visiting Nurse Foundation.
She also has been a guiding force in WNJ’s ArtPrize involvement as well as helping shape the firm’s collection.
Karr, who was also named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan, concentrates her practice as chair of Miller Johnson’s Probate and Estate Planning Practice Group. She was the first woman to chair the State Bar of Michigan’s Taxation Council.
Karr is a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, has been named a “Best Lawyer in America” for both tax law and trusts and estate law, and has been on the list of Super Lawyer Top 50 Women since its inception.
She has received a YWCA Tribute! Award and a “Thought Leader in the Law” award from Business Review.
Both Conway and Karr participate in pro bono legal contributions.
Other women included on the elite list are Julia Donovan Darlow, the first woman to serve as President of the State Bar of Michigan, and Jean Ledworth King, for whom the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan named their leadership award.
