The Tax Exempt Division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will offer a one-day workshop for small and mid-sized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 22-23, at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield.
These workshops are presented by IRS specialists in the regulation of tax-exempt organizations.
They address a variety of topics designed to help 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofits to maintain their tax-exempt status and comply with IRS rules and regulations.
Pre-registration is required and seating is limited each day. Cost is $45 per person.
Each participant receives an IRS tote bag stuffed with the latest information and a $5 lunch coupon.
Online registration is at ltu.edu/management/nonprofit.asp
Hosted by Lawrence Tech’s Center for Nonprofit Management, these workshops will be held in the gallery of the University Technology and Learning Center (UTLC), which is #17 on the campus map.
“The recent announcement by IRS that nearly 3,000 Metro Detroit nonprofits may lose their tax-exempt status because of non-compliance over the last three years makes this workshop timely and helpful.” said Professor Gerald Lindman, director of the Center for Nonprofit Management at Lawrence Tech. “This workshop is also excellent to train and update staff and board members of small and midsized charities who work on financial matters, as well as the CPAs and lawyers who support them.”
The one-day workshops cover:
• Tax-Exempt Status. Benefits and responsibilities of tax-exempt status under 501(c)(3), and actions that may jeopardize the tax-exempt status of an organization.
• Unrelated Business Income. The definition of unrelated business income, common examples, common exceptions and filing requirements. This includes a discussion of charitable gaming.
• Employment Issues. Classification of workers and filing requirements for employees and independent contractors.
• Form 990 Series. An overview of the Forms 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N (e-Postcard), including tips for record keeping and answers to frequently asked questions. This includes a presentation of resources and tools available to exempt organizations to help them file accurate, error-free returns.
• Required Disclosures. Overview of disclosures tax-exempt organizations are required to make, including new disclosure requirements imposed by the Pension Protection Act of 2006.
As a pilot test, the IRS will use TwitterFall at the Lawrence Tech workshops to accept and respond to questions from the audience, so participants are invited to bring Blackberries, iphones and laptops to take advantage of Lawrence Tech’s wireless campus.
