Legal Aid and Defender appoints new VP of human resources
Gail M. Wilson is the new vice president of human resources for the Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD), according to Deierdre L. Weir, president and CEO.

Prior to joining Legal Aid and Defender, Wilson was director of human resources and labor relations for Southfield Public Schools, director of human resources for the 36th District Court in Detroit, and a division human resources manager for Home Depot, U.S.A.

Wilson is also an attorney who practiced labor and employment law, including practice with the law firm of Miller Cohen, PLLC.

Wilson is a graduate of University of Detroit-Mercy where she earned a B.A. in business administration and a J.D. from the School of Law. She also holds an L.L.M. from Wayne State University School of Law.

“We are fortunate to have Gail join our firm,” said Weir. "Her combined experience in human resources, law and court administration is a perfect fit.  We look forward to her contribution to our mission.”

Wilson lives in Lathrup Village.

Federal Court names Laurie J. Michelson magistrate judge
Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen announced last week that the Court has selected Laurie J. Michelson for appointment as United States Magistrate Judge. Michelson is a resident of West Bloomfield. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law. She currently works at the law firm of Butzel Long in Detroit.

Michelson was one of five persons nominated by a Court-appointed Merit Selection Panel from among 107 applicants. The Panel was chaired by attorney Richard M. Helfrick. Other panel members included attorneys Stephanie D. Davis, Matthew F. Leitman, Michael L. Pitt and I.W. Winsten, as well as non-attorneys B.N. Bahadur, Williams F. Jones, Jr., Kathleen Straus and Iris Taylor.

Michelson’s name will be forwarded to the Administrative Office of the United States Courts in Washington, D.C. which will initiate the required background investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service. Upon the successful completion of those investigations, Michelson will be sworn in as a magistrate judge in Detroit, Michigan.

Michelson would fill the magistrate judge vacancy created by the retirement of Magistrate Judge Donald A. Scheer.
