Open house held at LAD office

Deierdre L. Weir (left), president and CEO of Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD), greets Lynn Davidson, Macomb Family Court's Friend of the Court, at the open house at LAD's new Macomb County office.

The Macomb County office of Detroit-based Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) held an open house Oct. 12 for the county's legal community at its new location in the Clemens Center Building, 32 Market Street.
“We’re pleased to be in downtown Mount Clemens,” Kelly L. Bidelman, managing attorney of LAD’s Macomb and Oakland County offices, said.  “It gives our clients easier access, and we’re in walking distance of circuit court.”
Like LAD’s headquarters in Detroit and its Oakland office, the 32 Market Street location is a full- service office, providing advice and direct representation on civil legal matters without charge to low-income Macomb residents.
“We’re the county’s largest free legal-service provider,” Bidelman said.
LAD began serving Macomb County in 2003 after a redistricting by the federal Legal Services Corp.
“Since that time, we have assisted more than 9,200 residents with their legal matters and have reported more than $1.1 million in monetary outcomes,” Bidelman said.
LAD is Michigan's oldest and largest provider of free civil legal services.  In addition to providing civil legal services in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, it represents criminal defendants in Wayne County and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
Including brief consultations and comprehensive legal services, LAD handles some 15,000 legal matters yearly.
