Friend of the Court’s For Our Children training seminar
Community leaders and representatives of several Wayne County social service agencies convened at Detroit’s Little Rock Baptist Church on September 23 for the seminar “Breaking Economic Barriers to Effective Parenting.” This third annual “train the trainer” program was organized by members of the Friend of the Court’s outreach consortium, Friend of the Court For Our Children (FOC FOC).

Launched in September 2006, FOC FOC seeks to bring community agencies, faith-based organizations, local leaders, government representatives, and the media together at the same table. The mission of this outreach program is to raise awareness and understanding of the court and Friend of the Court systems, as well as to better identify and address issues relating to family law and the needs of the public.

Participants in the training were taught not only how members of the public can best utilize the court resources available to them, but also what the public should expect from different types of court proceedings.

Third Judicial Circuit Court Chief Judge Pro Tem, the Honorable Lita M. Popke, welcomed participants and answered questions regarding family court policies and operations. Friend of the Court directors provided information on parenting time, modifying support, and support compliance to prevent adverse enforcement.

Legal Aid and Defender Association Attorney Hulen Simpson demonstrated how to fill out FOC motion forms and explained how parties should determine which form would apply to their individual situation.

Participants said the training was not only informative but that it contained valuable information they could bring back and share with their customers and clients. The consortium will continue with its regular quarterly meeting in November, and welcomes new participants. Anyone interested in attending, should contact the FOC at 313-224-6639.
