George La Plata

George La Plata, who served on the U.S. District Court bench in Detroit for more than a decade, died Sunday, Nov. 14 in Florida. He was 86.

 La Plata, a native of Detroit, was a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University, then graduated from Detroit College of Law in 1956.

La Plata was in private practice in Detroit from 1956 to 1979, then served as a judge on the Oakland County Circuit Court until 1985 when he became a professor at Detroit College of Law.

In February 1985, La Plata was nominated by President Ronald Reagan to a new seat created on the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan.

He was confirmed by the Senate two months later and served on the bench until his retirement in August 1996.

La Plata was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bloomfield Hills and First Baptist Church of Naples, FL.

An interment with honors was scheduled at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at Sarasota National Cemetery. A memorial service was scheduled at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at First Baptist Church of Naples.

La Plata is survived by his  wife, Frances; children AJ Rard (Kerry) and Dr. Marshall La Plata (Cindy); grandchildren Marci, Franci, Mandi and Joshua and 10 great grandchildren.
