In conjunction with the Michigan Supreme Court’s Adoption Day, Macomb County Circuit Court swill open adoption hearings to the public for two hours on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
The goal is to educate the community about the process, officials say, and to bring attention to the many children waiting to be adopted.
Typically, adoptions hearings are closed to the public, but adoptions in Judge Antonio P. Viviano’s courtroom will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to honor the day.
Michigan Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway will be among the dignitaries on hand for the event in Mt. Clemens.
Michigan Adoption Day, now in its eighth year, takes place annually on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
The state-wide event is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Michigan Supreme Court.
Macomb Circuit Court’s three additional Family Court Judges — Chief Judge Mark Switalski, Judge Mary Chrzanowski and Judge Tracey Yokich — also support the event.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed November Adoption Month in Michigan while the Michigan Supreme Court has issued a resolution declaring Nov. 23 as Michigan Adoption Day.
