Consultants say HuffPo site was their idea

NEW YORK (AP) — Two Democratic political consultants say The Huffington Post’s founders stole their blueprint for the popular news-and-views website, and they’re suing to get what they say is their rightful credit — and money.

Peter Daou and James Boyce say they came up with the site’s signature blend of blogs by prominent people, news aggregation, original reporting and online community-building, originally envisioned as a liberal counterpoint to such conservative-tilting sites as the Drudge Report.

In a statement, Huffington Post co-founders Arianna Huffington and Kenneth Lerer called the claims “pure fantasy.”

The site has become an online colossus, built on the idea of shared effort. It has made the top 10 current events and global news sites, launched city-specific pages and developed a roster of sections such as food and books. The work of its 70-person paid staff is augmented by content from news outlets and 6,000 bloggers who write for free.

Family of vanished woman awarded $3.5M

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The family of an Indiana college student who went missing six years ago has won a nearly $3.5 million judgment against two men they claim were involved in her disappearance.

Molly Dattilo’s family may never see the money, since one man is in prison and the other’s whereabouts are unknown. But her cousin, Keri Dattilo of Indianapolis, said the Monday ruling in Marion County Superior Court is an important step.

“I don’t think we’ll ever collect anything (but) this is the closest we have to any kind of accountability at this point,” she said.

Judge David Dreyer ordered the default judgment against John Shelton, 37, an inmate at the state prison in Plainfield, and his father, Edward Shelton. Neither man has ever been charged in Dattilo’s disappearance, and Indianapolis police declined to say whether the two were ever considered suspects.

But a lawsuit filed by Dattilo’s legal guardian in 2007 claimed the men had attacked Dattilo, possibly causing her death.

Governor OKs state’s official tartan

ALPENA (AP) —  Gov. Jennifer Granholm has named a design by Alpena-based weaver Kati Meek as the Great Lakes State’s official tartan.

Meek’s creation is titled “Up North” and uses a combination of greens, browns, red and blue.

The Scottish American Society of Michigan says it represents “the beautiful colors seen in Michigan’s waterscapes.”

Several years ago, Scottish groups in Michigan began asking  that Meek’s tartan become the state’s official tartan.
