MAJ examines appellate issues
The Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) will present an MAJ Plaintiff members-only evening forum on “Trial Court Strategies for Appellate Success” on Thursday, January 20 at the Baronette Renaissance Hotel in Novi.
The forum, from 6-9:30 p.m., is aimed at covering the essentials in making sure that the appropriate facts and legal issues are raised on the record and preserved for appellate review.
Breakout sessions on Med Mal, No-Fault and Employment will deal with specific issues that arise in certain areas of law, with an overview to what issues are on the front burner before the new court.

Cities receive funds for Dream Cruise
DETROIT (AP) — Eight suburban Detroit communities that participate in the annual Woodward Dream Cruise will receive $2,000 each to help defray local expenses.
The Detroit Free Press says Berkley, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Pontiac and Royal Oak will split $16,000 from the nonprofit’s Dream Cruise operating board.
The free, sponsor-supported event has for three years faced lost sponsorships and lawsuits. Leslie Helwig, treasurer of the Dream Cruise board, said the nonprofit has its finances back in order.
Participating cities split $145,000 in proceeds from sponsorships and merchandise sales in 2007.

Kodak and Shutterfly sue each other
NEW YORK (AP) — Eastman Kodak Co. has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against online photo sharing service Shutterfly Inc., which has fired back with a suit of its own, Shutterfly said in a regulatory filing.
Kodak runs an online service called Kodak Gallery that directly competes with Shutterfly.com. Both services invite people to upload photos, order prints, create bound photo books and emblazon their pictures on a host of products such as calendars and coffee mugs.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Shutterfly said Kodak is seeking an injunction, along with damages and costs, including legal fees, but the filing does not indicate what patents are in dispute.
“(Shutterfly) believes that it has meritorious defenses to this action and intends to defend this matter vigorously,” Shutterfly said in the filing.
Meanwhile, Shutterfly said it filed a lawsuit of its own, accusing Kodak of patent infringement. Shutterfly is also seeking an injunction, damages and costs.

Prison guard accused of accepting bribes
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A former Nevada man who worked as a federal prison guard in northern California has been charged with accepting bribes to smuggle contraband to inmates.
U.S. Attorney for Nevada Daniel Bogden says 25-year-old Najeeb Z. Peavy was indicted on one count of a public official accepting a bribe.
The indictment Bogden solicited the bribes from inmates at the federal prison in Herlong for about seven months beginning in March.
It doesn’t say who paid the bribes or identify the kind of contraband.
