Michigan Governor Rick Snyder started his term by naming Supreme Court Justice Maura D. Corrigan to his cabinet. Corrigan left the court January 14 to assume her duties as head of the Michigan Department of Human Services.
The DHS is a huge department and Corrigan will be its executive. Reporting to Snyder through Corrigan will be the departments of community health, education, and civil rights.
Corrigan was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals in 1992 and became Chief Judge of that 28-judge court in 1997. She was first elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1998.
Corrigan has long been a champion of children and their families. She was won numerous awards for her work advocating for children. Corrigan’s awards include the Oakland County Champion of Children Award (2010); Michigan’s Children’s Award (2008); U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Innovative Partnerships (OCS) Award (2008); Spectrum Human Services Chairman’s Award (2006); Michigan Family Support Council Judicial Award (2006); Vista Maria’s Child Advocate of the Year Award (2005); the Congressional Coalition of Adoption “Angels in Adoption” Award (2005); the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (OCS) Award for significant improvements to Michigan’s Child Support Enforcement Program (2002); and many others.
Naming someone to the supreme court gave Gov. Snyder the opportunity to select a solid conservative, giving Republican justices a 4-3 edge.
