Paying tribute to retired judges

Penna’s OF Sterling was packed the evening of Friday, Jan. 21 for a retirement celebration in honor of Macomb County Circuit Court Judges Antonio Viviano (left) and James Biernat (right). After dinner, those attending enjoyed a variety of speeches and tributes to the jurists from dignitaries representing Macomb County’s legal and civic community. The state’s mandatory retirement law for judges precluded Viviano and Biernat from seeking re-election and they ended their terms Dec. 31. Biernat served on the bench 10 years. Viviano was elected to Macomb County Probate Court in 1993 and, five years later, was assigned by the Michigan Supreme Court to the newly created Family Division of Circuit Court.
