Dykema attorney appointed to Junior Achievement board
Dykema Gossett PLLC is pleased to announce that Mark van der Laan, a Member in the firm’s Litigation Department, has been appointed to Junior Achievement of the Michigan Great Lakes, Inc.’s Board of Directors. Van der Laan assumed the new role in March 2011.
Junior Achievement of the Michigan Great Lakes, Inc. is the state’s largest Junior Achievement (JA) region geographically. It has over 1,900 volunteers educating over 53,000 students across 41 counties, and operates on a budget of over $1,000,000.
Worldwide, JA is the largest organization dedicated to educating K-12 students about succeeding in a world economy. The organization’s focus is to inspire and prepare young people to thrive through entrepreneurial thinking, work readiness and financial literacy.
At Dykema, van der Laan focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, consumer financial services and class action defense. He has a broad commercial and tort litigation practice that includes defense of breach of contract, lender liability claims, fraud, product liability, and consumer protection act claims.
Varnum’s Buquicchio adds American Red Cross to list of organizations he serves
In January, Varnum partner Steve Buquicchio was selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids.
The American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids serves a five-county region, including Barry, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, and Ottawa counties. Its mission is to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
A trial attorney, Buquicchio serves in a variety of leadership positions both in the community and in the legal field. He is past chair of the Grand Rapids Bar’s Litigation Section and a current member of its Executive Committee, as well as a member of the Board of Editors for Michigan Lawyers Weekly, and of the American Bar Association Advisory Panel. He is board-certified in creditor’s rights law. Outside his practice, he is actively involved in civic and charitable organizations. He sits on the board of the Michigan Chapter of the March of Dimes - Grand Rapids Div., as well as of Project Blueprint and Schools of Hope for Heart of West Michigan United Way. Buquicchio is also a youth coach for the YMCA and Thornapple Valley Baseball League.
