Organization expands immigration aid with third clinic opening
Justice for Our Neighbors of Southeast Michigan (JFON-SEMI), a nonprofit legal immigration services provider, is expanding to meet the growing needs of immigrants in the state. The opening of its third monthly clinic at the First United Methodist Church in Ypsilanti brings JFON-SEMI to full functionality in the region with additional locations at its flagship clinic in Dearborn and a recently opened location in Pontiac.
Annually, millions of people begin their immigration process into the United States: oftentimes, requiring years of effort and dedication. In 2010, Michigan welcomed the seventh highest number of refugees (according to the DHS Office of Immigration Statistics) as compared to any other state. JFON-SEMI has been working with this growing number of area immigrants, for over a year, to provide free, high quality legal services to low-income individuals. Staffed by a full-time immigration attorney and dedicated cohort of trained volunteers, JFON-SEMI has served more than 100 clients from 32 different countries to date.
Even with the addition of the third clinic in Ypsilanti, JFON-SEMI continues to receive a high volume of calls each week. Speaking for JFON-SEMI at the Ypsilanti opening, Pastor, Paul Perez, regional coordinator for JFON-SEMI said, “While there are many dedicated organizations in Southeast Michigan, the need for immigration legal services is still great. We are glad to be able to help address that need.”
Hellenic Bar presents evening of comedy
The Hellenic Bar Association is pleased to host a social event on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. at Niki’s Pizza in Greektown Detroit.
Featured comedian Tommy Simon, son of Basil Simon, together with his troupe of comedians Andrew Seiler, Erik Heilner, and Ryan Parmenter will provide an evening of laughs with Greek themed sketch comedy and Whose Line is It Anyway style improv games.
Pizza, salad and beverages will be provided and a cash bar will be available. The cost is $25 a person.
