Bauman named first woman chair at Hope

Mary V. Bauman, a Member at Miller Johnson, will serve as Chair of the Hope College Board of Trustees beginning July 1. She is the first woman in the college’s 145-year history to serve in this position. Ms. Bauman has been a board member since 2007. She is a 1980 graduate of Hope College and has actively supported it including serving on the presidential search committee in 1998.

Ms. Bauman received her law degree, summa cum laude, in 1986 from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Her practice is focused on employee benefits and executive compensation with her primary concentration being on health and welfare benefits. Ms. Bauman is the chair of the firm’s Health Care Reform Team as well as Miller Johnson's Diversity Partner and chairs the Diversity Council. She is ranked by Chambers USA for Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation. She is listed in the “Best Lawyers in America®” for Employee Benefits Law and recognized as a Michigan “Super Lawyer” for Employee Benefits/ERISA.

Bauman is an active member of Inforum – a professional women’s alliance including serving on the steering committee and launching the “WeConnect!” affinity group which is an effort to attract women of color to the organization. In the past, she has served on the board of trustees of the Forest Hills Educational Foundation; as treasurer and a member of the board of directors of Arbor Circle Corporation; and a member of the board of directors of HHS, Health Options. Bauman was chair of the insurance committee and a member of the Board of Benefit Services for the Reformed Church in America; and Academic Affairs chairperson and a member of the board of trustees of Western Theological Seminary.

Hope College is a distinguished and distinctive four-year, liberal arts, undergraduate college, affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. The curriculum offers a variety of courses leading to Bachelor degrees. During the 2010-11 school year, Hope enrolled 3,203 students from 42 states and territories and 30 foreign countries. U.S. News and World Report 2011 edition lists Hope among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation. The 2011 Fiske Guide to Colleges includes Hope as one of the country’s “best and most interesting” colleges and universities.
