On June 30, 2011, nineteen college students received their certificates of completion and $750 stipends at graduation ceremonies sponsored by the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section for successfully completing the month-long CLEO College Prelaw Summer Institute held this June at Cooley Law School's Auburn Hills campus. The students achieved an average LSAT score increase of nearly five points, including two students who achieved 13-point increases and seven students who scored 150 or better.
Special certificates of merit were awarded to Shannon King for Legal Writing, Jayant Trewn for Torts, and Joshus Cartee for Logic and Critical Reasoning. Ronniesha Smith, Verlinda King, Joshua Cartee, John Traylor, and David Tomenes received best courtroom advocate awards for their performance in the program's mock trial competition, and Shannon King and Verlinda King received certificates for the largest LSAT score increases.
Shannon King and David Tomenes delivered remarks on behalf of the students, commenting on the realistic law school experience and rigor of the program, and Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Cynthia Stephens was the keynote speaker, encouraging the students to take advantage of the dividends the program could pay for them in the future. Program Co-Directors Chris Johnson and John Nussbaumer thanked the students for their commitment and hard work and encouraged them to continue down the path to law school and the legal profession.
