Celebrating legacy of former dean

A special evening to celebrate the life and legacy of James K. Robinson will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Detroit Athletic Club.

The event is sponsored by the James K. Robinson Endowed Scholarship Fund Committee and Wayne State University Law School.

Robinson, who received his law degree from the Detroit school in 1968, died Aug. 6, 2010 at the age of 66.

Robinson had served as chair of the Litigation Department at Honigman Miller, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, assistant attorney general for the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and the seventh dean of Wayne Law.

The first recipient of the James K. Robinson Scholarship will be announced at the October event and will receive a full ride scholarship to Wayne Law from an endowed fund created in memory of Robinson.

The event will be the first of what will be an annual celebration of Robinson’s life with the proceeds from the evening used to supplement the endowed scholarship fund, according to school officials.

“Jim was always so proud of the excellent education he received at Wayne Law,” said Robinson’s wife, Marietta Robinson. “When he set up this scholarship in 2008, he hoped to help deserving students afford what was the starting point of his exciting career. Jim would have been so honored and humbled at the respect and affection that are energizing this event.”

Added fellow Wayne Law alumnus and friend I.W. Winsten, “Jim made a point at every step of his exceptional career to promote and mentor the lawyers and students with whom he worked. We established this annual event to honor Jim’s memory by funding student scholarship; so that many others are able to follow his path.”

Scholarship Fund Committee members and event organizers include: Marti Robinson, Thomas Cranmer of Miller Canfield; William Hochkammer and Winsten of Honigman
Miller; Thomas Kienbaum of Kienbaum Opperwall Hardy and Pelton; Richard Rossman, former U.S. attorney in Detroit; and Joseph Papelian of Delphi Corp. Honorary hosts
include the Michigan Supreme Court Justices and a number of other prominent members of the legal community.

Tickets to the event are $150 per person.
