Collaborative effort ensures implementation of innovative court e-filing system
In an effort led by Wayne County Clerk Cathy M. Garrett and in conjunction with Virgil Smith, Chief Judge of the Wayne County Circuit Court, the launch of a new e-filing system is planned for Nov. 7, 2011. On this date, only contract cases (CK) will be mandatory for e-file.

This newly implemented system will provide great benefit to Wayne County’s legal community by streamlining court services, according to Garrett.
“This innovative system will save lawyers’ time, which can instead be devoted towards client casework. Through this new tool, we’re also making it easier for Wayne County’s legal community to do its job more efficiently,” she explained.

The system will also allow the Third Judicial Circuit Court to maximize its resources by enabling attorneys to submit filings electronically at any time of the day, from virtually any PC with internet access. All documents can be easily filed when they are in an electronically generated text format, such as a PDF, if the text of the submission is searchable and taggable. Any attachments that are not available in this format can be easily scanned and then filed via this system. Additionally, attorneys can immediately access documents online and e-serve other parties within their cases.

The U.S. federal court system adopted electronic case management back in 2002, allowing attorneys to file pleadings, motions, and petitions via the internet.

The courthouse benefits associated with using this system include the ability to receive filings electronically, reduce operational costs, and improve upon customer service. Conversely, attorney benefits associated with using this innovative new system include free registration through an easy self-service process, 24 hour-a-day filing with multiple courtesy copies at no additional charge, and the elimination of extraneous printing, copying, packaging, and delivery of paper documents.

Later this month, e-filing training will be presented by Webinar participation. Both morning and afternoon sessions are planned for Monday through Friday, Oct. 24-28 and Oct. 31-Nov. 4.

Please note that the planned Nov. 7 launch date is only related to the contracts case (CK) type. For further information on registering for these training sessions, as well as more information about this new e-filing system, visit the Third Judicial Circuit Court website. There are only a limited number of spaces available.
