The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will hold its Fourth Annual 5K Race for Justice to be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m. along Detroit’s new RiverWalk.
The race is organized by the School’s Voice for Justice Committee in conjunction with the Alumni Relations Office and Student Bar Association.
It is open to alumni, students, faculty, children and members of the general public.
Proceeds benefit the UDM Law Public Interest Fellowship Program, which provides stipends to UDM Law students to serve during the summer months in areas of public service.
The fellowships funded by the Public Interest Fellowship Program expand the school’s tradition of service to the community.
Fellowships allow students to work in the public interest sector, enabling them to fulfill their call to serve and work toward the public good.
Students selected to receive the fellowships spend about eight weeks as summer interns for non-profit organizations, serving or advocating for the poor, disadvantaged, marginalized or underrepresented of society.
Since 2003, the UDM Law Public Interest Fellowship Program has funded some 70 law students to serve primarily in Detroit, but also in locations throughout the United
States and across the globe.
Recipients have done internships with various non-profit entities, including:
• African Women’s Lawyer’s Association, Accra, Ghana.
• Archdiocese of Detroit – Immigration Legal Services.
• Association of Defence Counsel – International Criminal Tribunal, the Hague.
• Association Jeunes pour Jeunes Social Center, Khemisset, Morocco.
• City of Detroit Human Rights Dept.
• Kids Voice, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
• Maurice and Jane Sugar Law Center, Detroit.
• Multicultural Council of Windsor, Ontario.
• ProSeniors, Cincinnati.
• Salvation Army’s William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, Detroit.
• Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services of Michigan.
Registration is $25 until Saturday, Oct. 29, and $30 on race day.
