Legal Aid and Defender to hold first 'Laddys' award ceremony Nov. 3

Legal Aid and Defender Association (LAD) will hold its first "Laddys" pro bono service awards ceremony Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the A. Albert Taubman Center for Design Services at the College for Creative Studies, 485 W. Milwaukee St.

"We have been honoring our pro bono attorneys for years through the very successful annual pro bono awards ceremony produced by our Civil Law Group," said Deierdre L. Weir, LAD president and CEO. "We've decided to build on that success and expand this event into an annual fundraiser to raise nondiscretionary funding for the Civil Law Group and other activities of the organization."

Weir said the organization wants the affair to be fun.

"That's why we're presenting the 'Laddys' -- a play on our LAD acronym and such entertainment industry awards as Emmys, Grammys and Oscars," she said.

At the ceremony, attorneys will receive recognition for exceptional volunteer service representing clients through LAD's Private Attorney Involvement Program. Other awards will be presented to attorneys nominated by LAD's Federal Defender Office and State Defender Office for outstanding service to LAD or the community in those respective areas of indigent criminal defense.

Among the Laddy recipients previously announced are:

* Impact on Domestic Violence - Kelli E. Collins, Attorney, Garian & Garian

* Friend of LAD - Robert A. Ficano, Executive, Wayne County

* Friend of LAD - Karen G. Luther, Director, Legal Aid for Children and Families, William Beaumont Hospital

Other honorees include Joseph W. Uhl (Pro Bono Attorney of the Year); Clark Hill (Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year); Office of General Counsel, Ford Motor Company (Kelvin W. Scott Award); Jacob M. Femminineo, Jr. (Pro Bono Spirit-Macomb County); Craig Lavoie (Pro Bono Spirit-Oakland County); and Michelle Carter (Pro Bono Spirit-Wayne County).

Earlier this week, LAD announced that attorneys Harold Gurewitz and Walter Pookrum were named recipients of Warrior of Justice awards.

Tickets for the event are $50 and are tax deductible. Tables of eight are available. Entrance to the College for Creative Studies is located at the corner of W. Milwaukee Street and Cass Avenue in the former Argonaut Building. Convenient free parking is available adjacent to the college.
