Ingham County properties in danger of tax foreclosure published
MASON, MI--Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing published the 2011 Annual Notice of Judicial Foreclosure Hearing. The publication is required by law and parcels in the tax foreclosure publication are currently in forfeiture, meaning 2009 or prior year's property taxes have not been paid. If property taxes are not paid by the end of March 2012, the property may be foreclosed upon - completely extinguishing the owner's interest in the property and turning title to the property over to the County Treasurer.
In 2011, Ingham County experienced a nine percent (9%) increase in the number of parcels listed in the County Treasurer's Annual Tax Foreclosure publication. The 2010 publication listed 1,504 parcels in danger of tax foreclosure and this year the publication lists 1,654 parcels.
"In the big picture, the problem of tax foreclosures seems to be leveling-off. I recognize a number of people continue to suffer - but the problem has grown less this year as compared to, for example, the 82% increase two years ago," said Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing. "We are also seeing some leveling-off of mortgage foreclosures in Ingham County."
The tax foreclosure list is published in the City Pulse and widely distributed in the community. It is also available on Treasurer Schertzing's website at www.ingham.org or by calling (517)676-7240.
"Property owners facing tax foreclosure should call my office at (517)676-7240 and we will direct them to community resources or try and work out a payment plan. We do not foreclose on anyone's home if they make a good-faith effort to pay their property taxes," Schertzing said.
