Barnes & Thornburg adds veteran real estate and environmental attorney
Ken Vermeulen, a long-time West Michigan real estate and environmental attorney, joined Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Michigan office on Jan. 1 as a member of the firm’s Real Estate and Environmental Law Departments.
Vermeulen has a broad-based real estate and environmental practice with a significant background in commercial leasing, zoning, state and federal cleanups, brownfield development and acquisition and divestiture due diligence.
“Ken’s wealth of experience in both the real estate and environmental arenas adds additional bench strength, both in Michigan and for our national industry teams,” said Tracy T. Larsen, managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg’s Michigan office. “Ken’s addition is another step in bringing together some of the best legal talent in West Michigan under a single roof.”
Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Vermeulen was a partner at Warner Norcross & Judd LLP in Grand Rapids where he practiced environmental and real estate law.
Vermeulen is deeply involved in a number of trade associations. He serves as general counsel for the Michigan Aggregates Association representing the association and many of its members on a wide variety of real estate and zoning matters. Ken also represents some of Michigan’s largest petroleum marketers and grocery retailers. He has authored several articles and book chapters relating to various real estate and environmental matters.
Vermeulen received his law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1989 and his bachelor’s degree in business from Calvin College in 1986. He was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1989 and also is a member of the American Bar Association and the Grand Rapids Bar Association. Ken currently serves as chair of the Grand Rapids Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section.
