The local chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) will present “Casualty Insurance — Beyond Basics” at its next meeting, held at the Stonewater Country Club, 7177 Kalamazoo Ave., Caledonia, on Jan. 26.
Additional insured coverage is the cornerstone to a good risk management program and is often misunderstood. Insurance and legal issues can be described the same way pilots sometimes explain their jobs: “Hours of boredom interrupted by moments of terror.” That is why it is best to plan ahead and make sure to have a quality contractual risk transfer program. In this session you will learn what the key issues are when naming an entity an additional insured or when requiring your company to be named as an additional insured.
Additional Insured language can apply to ongoing work, completed work or both. Blanket additional insured endorsements can leave upstream parties uncovered. Find out how you can be sure your organization handles this key risk management issue properly. Mike Poggi and Ben Hammond will discuss actual additional insured endorsements in current use and provide real life examples of legal issues created by additional insured endorsements.
Mike Poggi brings experience from insurance company underwriting and agency sales to his clients and prospects. He has served as commercial underwriter for complex commercial accounts as well as insurance sales and service, working in diverse industries representing contractors, manufacturers, service and local government entities. His prior management roles include: CEO for a local national insurance broker, Senior Vice President of a major bank commercial insurance division, and is currently involved in management roles as a Principal of Pinnacle Insurance Partners. He is both a licensed agent and consultant.
Ben Hammond is an attorney at Hilger Hammond and has been named “Rising Star” 2010-2011 by Super Lawyers. A significant portion of Ben’s practice concerns construction law, where he is routinely engaged in complex litigation. Ben’s clients are representative of all parties involved in construction, including owners, design professionals, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers. The remainder of Ben’s practice involves commercial and residential real estate transactions, business law, and commercial litigation.
Poggi and Hammond are both active in Associated Builders and Contractors, American Subcontractors Association of West Michigan, CFMA, and several other community organizations. Both have made presentations on a variety of topics involving law and insurance to the construction industry.
