OCBA panel launches annual Operation Afghan Iraq PAC
On Nov. 28, the Oakland County Bar Association's Veterans Committee, led by Chairman Charles E. Brown, issued its annual challenge to OCBA committees and all members to "out-fundraise" them in their collection of items for military men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Last year's rivalry between the Veterans Committee and the Family Court Committee resulted in a record-setting $25,000 worth of items and cash donated, enabling the OCBA to pack more than 90 care packages that were sent overseas on March 17, 2011.
Like last year, the collection effort was formally launched at the OCBA's Annual Holiday Gala, a sold out event Dec. 7 that generated more than $4,000 in cash donations, according to Lisa Stadig Elliot, executive director of the OCBA. This year's effort will culminate on March 15, Stadig Eliot indicated.
"If you would like to get in on the friendly and high-spirited competition, and help our armed services, please donate items or cash at the Oakland County Courthouse during the following motion call days: Wednesday, Jan. 25; Wednesday, Feb. 15; and Wednesday, Feb. 29," she said.
On those dates the OCBA will staff collection tables from 8-11 a.m. at the north and south entrances to the County Courthouse.
For those whose practices don't take you to the Oakland County Courthouse, the OCBA office will be a collection point, as will Michael Schloff's office, located at 6905 Telegraph Rd., Bloomfield Hills.
Operation Afghan Iraq PAC Subcommittee Chairman Michael Schloff stated, "The 3,000 lawyers of the OCBA care very deeply about our men and women on deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of our members have served in combat in Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan and deeply identify with what these modern American heroes are experiencing overseas. For all of us, this is a labor of love."

Suggested collection items include: magazines, books, AA and D batteries (premium and long-lasting), wet wipes, sunblock, Chapstick, nasal spray, eye drops, tooth paste (small tubes), toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, deodorant, Q-tips, foot powder, insect repellant, soap, hand sanitizer towels, wash clothes, M & M's, pretzels, Girl Scout cookies, Kool-Aid, Gatorade (powder), flavored coffee and teas, DVD movies, along with letters and cards of encouragement.
