Avenues of appellate review discussed

Appellate lawyers and judges from across the region will convene at the St. John’s Conference Center in Plymouth on Tuesday, May 15 for a half-day seminar focused on interlocutory appeals practice in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Hosted by the Michigan State Bar Appellate Practice Section’s Federal Practice Committee, the seminar, titled: “The Ins and Outs of Interlocutory Appeals,” will take place from 1-4:30 p.m. and feature insights from the bench and bar.

The session will begin with remarks by Plunkett Cooney appellate attorney Mary Massaron Ross, author of the chapter on interlocutory appellate review in the West Law treatise on the subject.

Massaron Ross, who serves as Plunkett Cooney’s Appellate Law Practice Group Leader and President Elect of DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar, will provide an overview of when and how to seek or oppose immediate review, including discussing collateral orders, extraordinary writs, class certification appeals, and other avenues of appellate review.

Representatives from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Clerk’s Office will offer their insight about interlocutory appeals, including orders immediately appealable as of right, permissive interlocutory appeals, and procedures for requesting and handling such appeals.

Judges from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as federal district court judges, will join a panel discussion about effective advocacy and approaches to interlocutory appeals.

Moderators for the discussion will include appellate attorneys Megan Cavanagh of Garan Lucow Miller and Jill Wheaton from Dykema.

The program, which costs $30 for section members and $45 for non-members, will conclude with a question and answer session between the judges and audience. Confirmed judge participants include:

• Judge Helene N. White, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals

• Judge John M. Rogers, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals

• Leonard Green, Clerk, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals
