Jackson gains national attention for recovery
Bloomberg News has spotlighted the city of Jackson on its website, citing its nation-leading drop in unemployment and strong economic progress, state Rep. Mike Shirkey announced.
The article, ''Recovery Begins in Michigan Town Burned by Manufacturing Losses'', states that Jackson led the U.S. with a 2.2 percent point decrease in unemployment for the year ending in February. Bloomberg said a total of 1,000 manufacturing jobs have been created in the region, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
''Jackson is helping lead Michigan out of the recession, and it's fantastic that people throughout the nation are starting to take notice,'' said Shirkey, R-Clarklake. ''Although there is certainly more work to be done, we're making huge progress on the economic front by changing the status quo in Lansing."
''Our reforms and reinvention are not the sole cause for the turnaround. But we are certainly helping build and maintain positive momentum."
Shirkey said the state Legislature's number one goal is to create an environment where the economy and job creation can thrive in Michigan. Shirkey supported comprehensive tax reforms to help Michigan small businesses more confidently invest, which is the first necessary step toward creating jobs.
