Ann Arbor attorney to lead judicial candidate forum

By Jo Mathis Legal News David Blanchard of the Ann Arbor Law Firm of Nacht, Roumel, Salvatore, Blanchard and Walker, will moderate the discussion among the six candidates for two open seats on the 22d Circuit Court for Washtenaw County on Tuesday, July 31 at Washtenaw County Community College. "It will be an honor to share the stage with all the great candidates and to be a part of strengthening the public connection with the issues in judiciary," said Blanchard, in a statement. "I will be working with the great co-sponsors of this event to craft a discussion on the diverse interest areas they reflect." "The point is to get a really good discussion going, so that the public will get to know the candidates." Blanchard volunteered for the spot, with the support of the partners at Nacht. He said he'd been working for a while to get such a forum together, and when he learned that the Washtenaw County Bar Association was interested in sponsoring such an event, he looked into the possibility of moderating it. When he was president of the Washtenaw Association for Justice, Blanchard moderated or arranged forums for open district court seats in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. "Nobody else was doing it at that time," said Blanchard, now president of Michigan Employment Lawyers Association. "That's how I developed an interest in keeping the concept going.I am working as a bit of a free agent now but very glad to be working with the partner organizations I have built up relationships over the years in various capacities. He said his experience as a trial lawyer appearing in front of judges throughout the state, and having been a clerk for a federal judge, will provide a context for him to draw on when focusing the issues. Blanchard grew up in Ann Arbor and received his undergraduate and law degrees from The University of Michigan. The event is sponsored by the Washtenaw County Bar Association, in collaboration with the Washtenaw Association for Justice, the Washtenaw Chapter of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, the Michigan Hellenic Bar Association, the Vanzetti Hamilton Bar Association, the Ann Arbor Branch of the NAACP, and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. The public is invited to the forum, which will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Morris Lawrence Building's Towsley Auditorium. Published: Mon, Jul 30, 2012
