The August primary election is behind the Muskegon County voters and redistricting seems to have had little effect on voter turnout.
According to Kimberly Grimm, Muskegon County Elections Coordinator, “Primaries always had low voter turnout and this primary had a turnout of 16.49%.”
To avoid any problems associated with the redistricting, every registered voter in the County of Muskegon received a new voter identification card in the mail with the address of their polling place well in advance of the election.
“There were signs posted at all prior precinct locations no longer in use directing voters to contact the clerk’s office to find out their new polling location,” said Grimm. “Registered voters can also go to www.michigan.gov/vote to ascertain their voting location.”
There were a total of 21,456 ballots cast in Muskegon County and of those 7,669 were Republican Party and 12,785 were Democratic Party. Nonpartisan ballots cast 1,002, and blank ballots cast 13.
The county races that will face off in November are:
County Clerk — Nancy Waters (D) and Cindy Fairfield(R); Nancy Waters defeated Democratic challenger Mandan Mitteer 8807 to 2646 respectively.
Muskegon County Prosecutor race — Democratic primary won by D. J. Hilson, current assistant prosecuting attorney with 5355 votes, beating Marc Curtis (4208) and Stephen C. Corwin (2204); no Republican challenger
The Muskegon County Sheriff contest — Democratic primary won by incumbent Dean C. Rosier (5966 votes), defeating John J. Jurkas (5129) and Joel Dobis (918); no Republican challenger: Independent Ronald Grasmeyer
Muskegon County Treasurer — Tony Moulatsiotis (D) will be facing Eric Wolof (R) in the November election.
Results for the nonpartisan position of 14th Judicial Circuit Judge put Randy Kostrzewa as the winning candidate with 4142 votes compared to Annette Smedley (2568), Michael G. Walsh (2352) David Wells (2237), Joe Bush (2213), and Karen Groenhout (1212). Kostrzewa will face Smedley in November.
The November election will clear the field with those left with competitors after the primary. Let the final campaigning begin.
