Vercruysse Murrary and Calzone attorney Susan Hartmus Hiser has been elected by The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers as a newly elected fellow. Election as a Fellow is the highest recognition by ones colleagues of sustained outstanding performance in the profession, exemplifying integrity, dedication and excellence. Hiser joins Robert M. Vercruysse, Gregory V. Murray, David B. Calzone and retired member Virginia F. Metz as Fellows in the elite organization.
The 17th installation of Fellows will be held Nov. 3, 2012, in Atlanta, Ga., coincident with the American Bar Assoiciation’s Labor and Employment Law Section’s Continuing Legal Education Conference. With the current installation, the College is represented by 1,200 members in 43 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and six provinces from Canada.
The College was the vision of a number of the Fellows. The idea was to further establish the profession in all its aspects as one uniquely important to the world of labor and employment law, individual rights, collective bargaining and dispute resolution. The College was established in 1995 through an initiative of the Council of The Section of Labor and Employment Law of the American Bar Association. It operates as a free standing organization recognizing those who, by long and outstanding service, have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field.
Hiser practices in the areas of labor and employment litigation on behalf of private and public sector employers. For the past 21 years, Hiser has represented employers in litigation filed in both state and federal courts, as well as in administrative proceedings before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and the Michigan Employment Relations Commission. She has experience in representing employers in multi-plaintiff harassment and disparate treatment cases. Hiser has also conducted in-house training on all areas of employment law, including harassment prevention, legal compliance, and workplace policies. She is frequently called upon both to assist in and to conduct workplace investigations on behalf of her clients.
Hiser was also included in Michigan Super Lawyers and was listed in The Best Lawyers of America for Labor and Employment Litigation for the first time in 2012. She has prepared the “Asked and Answered” column for the monthly publication “Michigan Employment Law Letter” from June 2007 to present. Hiser earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan with high distinction in 1988 and her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1991.
