SBM annual meeting set for Sept. 19-21

Soultivity to perform
Members of the legal community will gather Sept. 19-21 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids for the State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting and Solo and Small Firm Institute.
Ann Arbor's all-lawyer band, Soultivity, will perform during a reception on Thursday, Sept. 20.
State Bar members who have achieved the highest honors in the areas of leadership, professional integrity, and pro bono and community service will be recognized at the Awards Banquet beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The Michigan State Bar Foundation, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, and Michigan Association for Justice will also present awards during this ceremony.
The SBM & ICLE Solo and Small Firm Institute will host a faculty of 24, including these national speakers:
Scott Bassett, solo practitioner focusing on appellate practice and family law; Ann M. Guinn, G & P Associates; principle
Barron K. Henley, Affinity Consulting Group LLC founding member; Matthew Homann, LexThink LLC founder;
Frank Sanitate, Frank Sanitate Associates president; and Janet K. Welch, State Bar of Michigan executive director.
These speakers will share their expertise about increasing innovation in your practice, new-age networking, the latest and greatest technology, value-based billing, practicing with your iPad, and more.
On Thursday, Sept. 20, Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young will swear in the 78th president of the State Bar, Bruce A. Courtade, and other officers during the Inaugural Luncheon. In addition, Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Michael J. Riordan will swear in the 2012-2013 chair of the Representative Assembly, Dana M. Warnez, and the Michael Franck and Unsung Hero awards will be presented at its business meeting.
Also on Thursday, the Celebrating Diversity Reception will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Hosted by the Justice Initiatives Committee, the reception will celebrate the rich diversity of the State Bar, and acknowledge the work accomplished over the past year in support of achieving greater diversity and inclusion in the legal profession in Michigan. The reception will feature a nd a silent auction of photographs created by high school students in the West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology youth program. Net proceeds from the auction will benefit the WMCAT program and the Access to Justice Fund, which supports civil legal aid for the poor in Michigan.
On Friday, the 50-Year Golden Celebration Luncheon will take place from noon-2:00 p.m. This event honors fellow lawyers being recognized for 50 years of membership in the State Bar of Michigan.
