David Leyton named president of PAAM board of directors
David Leyton, Genesee County prosecutor since 2005, was elected as president of the Board of Directors of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM), the association announced recently. He will serve a one-year term through August 2013.
“I am honored to be elected by my fellow prosecutors from across the state to help lead an organization that is dedicated to seeking justice for crime victims and ensuring the public’s safety,” Leyton said. “PAAM plays an important role in law enforcement by offering educational training programs for assistant prosecutors, providing critical information to the legislature and executive branch regarding criminal justice system issues, and by serving as the cohesive voice for prosecutors from all 83 counties in Michigan on matters of public safety.”
Leyton will be accompanied by his fellow prosecuting attorneys in the following officer positions: Kym Worthy, Wayne County prosecuting attorney, was elected president elect; Victor Fitz, prosecuting attorney in Cass County was elected vice president; and Mike Wendling, St. Clair County prosecuting attorney, was elected secretary/treasurer.
Chief Judge King appoints Paul Brown new civil court officer
On Aug. 24, the 36th District Court’s Chief Judge, Hon. Kenneth J. King officially swore in Paul Brown as a civil court Officer. Brown, a former 36th District Court supervisor of the Traffic & Ordinance Division, was Chief Judge King’s first appointment to court officer. As a 36th District court officer, Brown will be responsible for serving civil summons, affidavits and conducting seizures of property as directed by the court.
District court marks ‘Constitution Day’ with free legal advice
In celebration of Constitution Day, the 36th District Court will again offer free legal aid to the general public. From 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 18 and 19, local attorneys will volunteer their time to answer legal questions in a variety of areas including real estate, traffic, social security family law, contracts, landlord-tenant, collections, bankruptcy, child support and probate.
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine men on Sept. 17, 1787.
U-D Mercy alums hold reception at annual bar meeting Sept. 20
University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Dean Lloyd Semple will host a complimentary reception for all alumni attending the Annual Meeting of the State Bar of Michigan at the Amway Grand Hotel in Grand Rapids. Alumni will gather in the Ruby Room on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 4:30 - 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. State Bar leaders and members of the judiciary are welcome to join the party and celebrate the UDM Law Centennial year.
