From Warner Norcross and Judd, and by Cynthia Price

Matthew D. Johnson, a partner at the law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, will serve as the new chair of the Agriculture Industry Group.

Warner Norcross works with family farms, agri-businesses, corporate farms, orchards, agri-chemical manufacturers, produce marketing and distribution companies, food distributors, livestock breeders and producers of alternative fuels throughout the Midwest.  As a full-service law firm, Warner Norcross assists clients with a broad range of matters, from purchase and sale of property, immigration and labor issues, environmental permitting and enforcement actions, tax, financing, litigation and related issues.
Johnson joined the firm in 2002 and concentrates his practice in business and corporate services and securities law, in addition to the work he does in agriculture. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Grand Rapids Bar Association and was named a Rising Star by Michigan Super Lawyers in 2012.

Johnson grew up in rural Michigan, where he worked on his aunt’s and uncle’s horse farm. Active in polo and the owner of four horses, he serves as coach/manager of Michigan State University’s Intercollegiate Polo Team, which includes caring for an additional 13 horses. Johnson is president of the Meadowview Farm Polo Club and also a board member of Every Child Included, whose mission is to provide an ultra-accessible family fun park for children and adults with special needs, their family members, caregivers and friends.

Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from Albion College and a doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School.
Comments Johnson, “I also live in a rural area in northeast Kent County surrounded by family farms.  In truth, I would usually rather be in the seat of a tractor than the chair behind my desk.

“As a result, I am excited to assume the reigns of the Agricultural Industry Group... [M]y role...is...a chance

to place more emphasis on our existing practice, specialties and unique skill.”
