The vital functions of CASA volunteers, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, are moved forward through an organization headed by Executive Director Patty Sabin, assisted by Jennifer Volkers, Advocate Supervisor, and others.
CASA of Kent County serves abused and neglected children in child protective proceedings through court-appointed community volunteers who advocate solely in the best interests of children who are wards of the court. The advocates “provide continuity for the child by having at least one person who is involved with the case from the beginning until the end.”
On Oct. 30, the 27th Circuit Court Family Division swore in another cohort of fully-trained CASA volunteers. Judge Patricia Gardner administered the oath to 11 new volunteers in her courtroom; two additional volunteers were unable to attend.
Judges Paul Denenfeld and George Jay Quist joined Judge Gardner in speaking to the newest class. They encouraged them to be independent and constant in their child advocacy, with Judge Denenfeld reading them the touching poem “The Advocate” by Mercedes Lawry. Judge Gardner placed a CASA logo pin on each new volunteer, while Judges Quist and Denenfeld congratulated each volunteer with a handshake and a rose.
