Jackson County set for Michigan Adoption Day
Michigan Adoption Day, an event jointly sponsored by the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Department of Human Resources (DHS), will take place on Friday, November 16, at the Jackson County Courthouse.
Circuit Judge Richard N. LaFlamme will preside over adoption hearings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and Probate Judge Diane M. Rappleye will preside over adoption hearings from 1 to 2 p.m.
There will be a reception following each adoption, with entertainment for the children along with gift bags. Supreme court Justice Stephen J. Markman will be present alongside Judge LaFlamme to help celebrate this tradition.
With assistance from local DHS offices and private adoption agencies, other Michigan Courts will finalize adoptions on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, hold celebrations for adoptive families, and provide information about the adoption process.
Because Michigan Adoption Day is so close to Thanksgiving, the theme is "Giving Thanks for Families." It is hoped that Michigan Adoption Day will bring the adoption process to the public's attention. By educating people about the process, it is hoped that the result will be more adoptions providing more children with safe and loving homes.
At any given time, Michigan has more than 19,000 children in foster care. The vast majority of these young people are victims of abuse and neglect. While some will eventually return to their homes or be placed with relatives, thousands more are still in need of permanent homes.
