LAD conducts free workshop on small claims court
Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) conducted the first of three free fall workshops for residents of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties on how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments Oct. 23 at LAD’s Detroit-Wayne office, 613 Abbott St.
Small claims court is a judicial process in district courts for settling money disputes of $5,000 or less that is designed to be easy enough for residents to navigate without an attorney, said LAD staff attorney Eric Wardford, who conducted the workshop.
Mary Morris, a program representative for the Wayne Mediation Center, was the guest speaker at the workshop. She explained to attendees how they could use mediation as an alternative to filing suit in small claims court.
LAD scheduled the fall workshops in response to the popularity of its six spring and summer workshops on small claims court, Johnson said. The second and third workshops were scheduled for Nov. 8 in St. Clair Shores and Nov. 13 in Pontiac.
