Miller Canfield adds insurance benefit for employees raising children with autism
The law firm of Miller Canfield is self-adopting adding insurance benefits for lawyers and staff raising children with autism. Although the firm’s insurance plan is self-funded and not impacted by the Michigan Autism Reform legislation passed in March 2012, Miller Canfield is taking a leadership role by offering the benefit to all U.S. employees – regardless of Michigan residency – for the diagnosis and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Autism Spectrum Disorders include autistic disorder, Asperger’s disorder, and pervasive development disorder.
Miller Canfield lawyer Ron Hodess is a member of the board of directors of the Autism Alliance of Michigan, which advocated for the passage of the legislation in Michigan. He is also on the board of directors of the Friendship Circle Autism Alliance of Michigan and active with the Autism Society of America, Oakland County Chapter.
Other companies in Michigan that are taking the lead along with Miller Canfield include DTE Energy, Quicken Loans, Meijer and Motor City Casino, in addition to national companies such as Microsoft, Home Depot, Intel, Capital One, Time Warner and many others.
Miller Canfield’s Autism Spectrum Disorder coverage begins Jan. 1, 2013.
Company CEO named to the board at the DIA
Linda Orlans, principal of Orlans Associates and CEO of eTitle Agency, has been appointed to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Board of Directors. In this role, Orlans will serve a three-year term on the board.
Orlans’s selection to the DIA board is supported by a history of commitment to non-profits. She serves on the Board of Directors at Inforum Center for Leadership and Beaumont Hospital’s First Words Society. She also serves on the advisory boards of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan, Beyond Basics, and is on the Board of Trustees at the Detroit
Opera Theatre and at the Michigan State University College of Law.
Orlans has been recognized widely for her civic and professional accomplishments, earning the George M. Bashara Jr. Distinguished Alumni Award from the Michigan State University College of Law, the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Central Great Lakes Award, 2010 Top Real Property Attorney, and 2012 dBusiness “Powered by Women” top female business leader.
“I am honored to serve as a board member because a vibrant art community is essential for Detroit’s revival,” Orlans said of her appointment to the DIA governing body.
