After three full days of recounting Muskegon County ballots cast in the race for the 14th Circuit Judge, the State Board of Canvassers has certified that Annette Smedley remains the winner. She will be sworn into office on Dec. 28.
The recount left Smedley with a margin of 221 votes.
Laketon Township Hall was a busy hub December 4 through 6 as election specialists from the Secretary of State’s Board of Canvassers set up shop to recount ballots. The recount was performed by local municipal clerks and individuals appointed by the Muskegon County Board of Canvassers.
Six county precincts could not be recounted due to envelopes containing the ballots had not been sealed properly, or because the number of ballots in the envelopes did not match the number of votes originally recorded by computer tabulation machines. Muskegon Heights had two of the unrecountable precincts; Norton Shores had one unrecountable precinct, as did the townships of Casnovia, Dalton and Ravenna.
The results of the recount will make Smedley Muskegon County’s first female circuit judge. She will serve a six-year term, succeeding long-time Judge James M. Graves, Jr. who is retiring because he is not allowed to run again under the State Constitution’s age cap for judges.
